New CEO
After Eisner resigned, Robert Iger took over as CEO of Walt Disney. In 2006, Disney and Pixar's relationship was wearing thin. Iger began negotiations with Steve Jobs, president of Pixar, to possibly merge. In January 2006, Disney announced that they would be purchasing Pixar in an all-stock transaction that was worth $7.4 billion. In June 2006, Disney and Pixar released Cars, which was a huge success. In July 2006, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest came out in theaters, and broke company records by becoming Disney's highest grossing film ever.
Disney Purchases Marvel
In 2008, Disney Parks changed the park name MGM Studios to Hollywood Studios. In 2009, Disney purchased Marvel Entertainment. This was a huge deal, and resulted in a lot of successful Marvel super hero movies. Roy E. Disney passed away from stomach cancer in December 2009. He is known as the last member of the Disney family to be involved with the running of the company.
Disney Purchases Lucasfilm
In 2010, Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 released, which went on to win 2 Academy Awards, and break many box office records. In November 2010, Tangled, the first CGI Disney Princess film, released in theaters worldwide. In December, Disney released Tron: Legacy, which managed to gross $400 million during it's theatrical run. In October 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, and announced they plan to release Star Wars Episode VII in 2015.
